What Can Be Termed As A “World Class” Organization?

by Utpal Vaishnav on January 2, 2009

World Class Organization means: “The recognition of an organization as a benchmark by its industry sector and, for some aspects, by other industry sectors.”

Again, characteristics are definable depending on your business sector.  For example, if primary business of the organization is software development then we need to define characteristics based on Benchmark-able Software Development Business Management practices.

Usually a World Class Software Development Business Management possesses the following characteristics:

  1. The organization treats their employees as the MOST vital asset. They ensure that employees are 100% satisfied. They have ‘Your Employee Satisfaction’ system in-place and followed. Any suggestions from even bottom-most level of employees are recorded and used to provide satisfaction to them.
  2. Every employee starts believing that it is not a company where they are working, it is their OWN company! Company make best use of this mindset to serve their clients in a way they are delighted.
  3. The organization ensures that proper operations are taking place. Commitments are met. Proper cash-flow is maintained. There is no scarcity of funds because of proper forecasting.
  4. Appropriate CMM (Capability Maturity Model) levels are applied and followed. Project Management is done with the state-of-art project management practices and tools and extremely talented project managers. Most important is that ‘They perform!’ within the scheduled turn-around-time. They are constantly in touch with client. They understand: when they have communicated sufficient, they need to communicate once more!
  5. Proper feedback system is in place. Leaders provide constructive feedback; followers follow that and become leader to create more leaders. All the feedback is treated as one of the key indicators for achieving result.
  6. Other organizations are envy of the culture of your organization. People want to work with the organization no matter if the salary is not too high compared to the competitors.
  7. Even competitors want to do business with the organization in order to learn the ‘world class’ approach.
  8. Other than current market, people talk about the methods that the organization follows in order to become what the organization is today.

This list can be stretched further… however, I believe it has created the frame of what  a ‘World Class’ Organization might be.

World Class Organization has nothing to do with its size. Even a two-man company can become world-class. Everyone knows example of Google.. Lary and Brin… two world-class guys… who created world-class search engine algorithm and built the world-class company. Google is big today… Now, think of Google before 10 years… They are harvesting what they had ploughed 10 years ago.

Best wishes to invent an opportunity to work in a world-class organization!
