You’re in Project Management. Your job is to manage projects.
I once worked with a small SOHO company (7 employees). We had to deliver several projects. The Project Manager used to spend 4 hours daily (yes, and I don’t kid you) chatting with the client, at the time of client’s choice. (He used to work till 11.30pm in the nights while office closing time was 7:30pm!)
Guess what, that project completed at the cost of two other. The Project Manager didn’t find time to manage other projects well.
If you’re the Project Manager, your job is to manage the project and to deliver the results. Results are exactly what is expected from the project.
Try and get out of everything else because everything else is mostly a waste of your time. Manage Project by working on it not by working in it.
Be systematic and specific. Implement a Project Collobaration System at the earliest. Until that, ask questions in e-mail, get answers in e-mail. Chat should be just for building rapport with the client, not for taking the requirements.
You must have free time to ‘think’ about successful delivery, not just to be engaged in chatting. Ensure that for successful project management.
