How To Derive Major Goals of The Project

by Utpal Vaishnav on August 13, 2009

Most important part while starting any project is to decide the prime goal that the project is expected to achieve. Ideally, Project owner should undertake this exercise. It can be achieved by getting engaged in brainstorming sessions with different stakeholders.

Here are 11 steps that will help the project owner get that clarity.

  1. Form a group of no more than 8 people.
  2. Make sure the meeting room is equipped with a whiteboard.
  3. Tentative duration for the meeting should be no more than 8 hours. If more time is required; break the brainstorming sessions into more days.
  4. Start the brainstorming session.
  5. Begin with the main goal and discuss sub-elements.
  6. Try different formulations. When a usable starting point is derived, write it down on the white board.
  7. Enter keywords in the structure and headings for the detail levels.
  8. Realign the main purpose whenever necessary.
  9. Get consensus of the main goal and all major sub goals.
  10. Make a note of it as the project
  11. Use it while communicating with the Project Manager.

To make the project a success, it is an absolute must to be 100% clear on the prime goal of the project. Be clear and help the project manager deliver you successful project.
