Directness, A Deviant Act That Is More Than Worth In Agile Project Management
Lack of directness is a project killer. It blocks smart ideas, fast actions and team members contributing the common goal with the knowledge and skills that they have. When directness is in-place, everything just operates faster and better.
Many people do not express themselves with directness. They don’t communicate straightforwardly or put forth ideas looking to kindle the discussion. What the hell is openness? They keep their mouth shut in order to avoid conflict or make team mates or the project manager happy. They sugar-coat bad news just to maintain outer shell.
This is absolutely injurious to project’s health.
Directness leads to triumphant. It gets team members in the conversation and when you get team members speaking their hearts and minds, your project gets idea-affluent. Meaning, more ideas get introduced, discussed, pulled apart and improved. Everyone opens up. Any project which can consistently bring more idea-rich people and their minds into the conversation is at gain for sure.
Directness generates pace. When ideas are in everyone’s face, they can be discussed swiftly, expanded, eliminated and enhanced. It gets into the action rapidly. Directness is a way to sustain in a global market when a back-bedroom 4 people enterprise in India or China can execute projects faster than your company.
Directness reduces costs. Nevertheless, it is not very easy to calculate it precisely, consider how it eliminates meaningless meetings and the reports that everyone knows. Think how it can replace fancy Flash presentations or PowerPoint slides. It doesn’t matter if it is about project scope discussions, communications plan or status reports.
Agile projects just cannot afford lack-of-directness in today’s scenarios. It works because it un-muddles.
Many people argue that it is against human-nature however, so is taking your dinner at midnight in the office just to attend a client’s call. We do many things that are not easy but a necessary evil for the growth and success. The good thing about directness is that it’s a deviant act that is more than worth it.
If implemented proactively, it can be the biggest positive factor for successful Agile Project. To get directness, you reward it, praise it, and talk about it. Most of all you yourself demonstrate it in a cheerful and even embroidered way.
