Movie Review: Love Aaj Kal

by Utpal Vaishnav on August 25, 2009

Inspired from the Taiwanese movie Three Times , Love Aaj Kal is an adorable movie that shows nature of wooing in the ever changing times.

It is a director’s darling; non-mundane love story which wasn’t very easy to write and direct. In fact, there are two different stories which run in-parallel within the same context. If you are detail oriented and attentive, this is the move will suit your taste for sure.

Love Aaj — London, San Francisco, Delhi — 2009.

Jay (Saif Ali Khan) andj Meera (Deepika Padukone) are a modern-day couple who lives in London. They enjoy each other’s company but are utmost practical from nature. When their life pulls them in different paths and they believe that long distance relationship does not work, they decide to celebrate their official call-off of their relationship.
Love Kal — Delhi, Calcutta — 1965.

Veer Singh [Saif Ali Khan again who played the role of young Rishi Kapoor] is struck by a bombshell when he sees Harleen for the first time. He travels to Calcutta, a thousand kilometers by train to stand under her balcony, only to have a glimpse of her face. And yet not speak a word with her.

Love Aaj-Kal

Story of Jay and Veer runs simultaneously. Both are almost opposite and not able to understand to each other. When the story progresses, the director beautifully makes us realize that experience of the love is same even though the process of relationship is totally different.

The story unfolds in a novel, never-tried way. Use of Saif-in-sepia as young Rishi is a great experiment which is capable of confusing some people. While in the end, fragmented pieces are put together, the enthralling picture emerges.

The essence of the film is the second hour. Deepika’s indecisiveness … marriage … realization… waiting… the end when lovers meet… everything is fascinating.

Imtiaz Ali is proves that he is a brilliant guy. He is successful in establishing himself as a successful storyteller. Songs of his selection are gem. Twist, Ahun-Ahun and Chor-bazari are just awesome.

Saif and Deepika have given the best of their performances. Rishi Kapoor as always is cool. Gisele Monteiro who plays the role of Harlin is pretty. Rahul Khanna also does well. Neetu Singh-Kapoor in the end is a pleasant surprise.

Anyone who has been in love ever will enjoy the move if they understand the essence of it.

Storytelling: 3.5/5
Dialogues: 2.5/5
Music: 3.5/5
Acting: 3.5/5
Direction: 3.5/5
Love: 4/5
Overall: 3.5/5 (Good and enjoyable)

In one sentence: The feeling the calling of true love remains the same in any given context.
